Schools / Education

Most Danes attend public schools (Folkeskolen) from grades 1 through 9. Private schools are available and becoming increasingly popular.

After Folkeskolen those who wish to get a college education need to go to High School for three years, gymnasiet. When entering gymnasiet, students must choose between sproglig (linguistic) and matematisk (mathematical) branch. This means that some level of specialization already takes place in High School.

College education in Denmark is radically different >from the system in the United States. There are no private universities, there is no tuition and all (Danish) students are even given automatic grants of approximately $500 per month (Statens Uddannelsesstøtte) when attending a university.

"Undeclared majors" don't exist. Before entering the university, students must decide whether they want to take a bachelor's degree or a master's degree and apply for one specific field of study, for example law or economics. After a masters degree few students continue in Ph.D.-programs. These usually consist of three years of research work.

One important difference between Denmark and the United States is worth noting:  Students in the programs leading to a master's degree usually never receive a diploma certifying completion of a bachelor's degree. However, some universities issue such diplomas after three years of study to students going abroad. The primary reason for the equivalence between four years of college study in the U.S. and three years at a Danish university is the specialization at the university and in high school.

Danish Universities

In the Copenhagen area:

The Danish international study program, DIS, coordinates study programs in English at the universities. I strongly recommend visiting their site.

The University of Copenhagen was founded in 1479 by King Christian the First.

Handelshøjskolen is Denmark's best business school.
DTU, The Technical University of Denmark is probably the leading technical university in Scandinavia.

Head out of town and go back to the seventies at RUC, Roskilde Universitetscenter. If you're from Eugene, you will feel right at home...

The Royal Danish School of Pharmacy is "Farmaceuthøjskolen" in Danish. It is a university-level institution. (I wonder where the word "Royal" came from in the English title.)

KVL is the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University.
Fysioterapeutskolen don't have their homepage ready yet, but maybe later...

Out of Copenhagen:

Aalborg Universitet
In the city where the famous fairy tale writer Hans Christian Andersen was born, we find Odense Universitet
Crown prince Frederik of Denmark received his degree in political science from Århus universitet

Dormitories
The central admissions agency, Centralinstillingsudvalget is on the web.
